The PEOPLE'S VOICE

As a mother of three, a wife, a local farm owner, a softball coach, and a professional, life felt pretty hectic. Activism and running for local office were far from my mind.
Then I found out about the contamination of Holmdel and Monmouth County drinking water, poised to take place at the former Vonage headquarters here in Holmdel. While the Township Committee knew about this environmental disaster, for two years, they did nothing to stop it.
My family and I couldn’t believe what was going on, and we knew we had to get involved. We quickly met amazing Holmdel residents who had the same concerns. As private citizens, we engaged legal representation and expert witnesses to prove how out-of-date the Vonage wastewater management plant was, and that Holmdel has the authority to do something about it.
Unbelievably, the Township Committee turned a deaf ear and even gave the developer a 30-year tax break. Then the TC voted to spend millions of Holmdel taxpayers’ money to build a new force main sewer line for the developer in an environmentally sensitive area. Meanwhile, the call to help Holmdel schools, which are facing a terrible budget crisis due to inflation, went unheard.
It seems clear that the Township Committee didn’t care about issues that mattered most to our town: clean drinking water, public health, great schools, responsible development, and fiscal responsibility.
It’s time for a change! Holmdel deserves better.
I am running because we need elected officials who will put Holmdel first and listen to and respond to residents’ concerns. We need more transparency and accountability.
My family and I have lived here for 15 years. I am a graduate of Smith College and in my professional life, I have spent more than 20 years as a financial communications specialist, focused on delivering the results and excellence expected by some of the world’s most successful business people.
With your support, we can change Holmdel to be better!

Candidate for Township Committee

For those of you who don’t know me, I have been a Holmdel resident for almost 20 years. I have been engaged in the community for years, whether it was as a HYAA coach, fighting against lighted turf fields at Cross Farm Park, or as a founding member of F.A.S.T., which was instrumental in securing our new centralized fire station as well as our first new fire truck in many years. More recently, I served as a member of the Holmdel Planning Board for the past 4 years.
I am excited to announce I am running for Holmdel Township Committee again. Why? The answer is simple. The handling of the Vonage project renewed my passion to serve our residents.
The Vonage project, approved with a last-minute sweetheart deal for the developer, would have had a serious environmental impact on our drinking water. Witnessing the Township Committee meetings and being involved in the application as a member of the Holmdel Planning Board, I am deeply concerned that the current Township Committee does not listen to the concerns of its constituents.
The current members hold a 4-1 majority voting block and it has become apparent to me that they do not feel they need to be accountable to residents. The Township Committee ignored concerns voiced by residents about the contamination of our drinking water for two years, gave the developer a tax break, and then, at the last minute, voted to spend millions of taxpayers' money to construct a force main sewer line for the developer.
This is far from the only issue facing our community.
Like many towns, our schools are facing a budget crisis due to rising health and transportation costs and reduced state funding. The Bell Works redevelopment has been successful for both the community and the Township’s financials due to the PILOT program, which the Township retains 95% with zero for the schools. The Bell Works PILOT program has provided the Township Committee with significant windfall over the past several years and allowed it to spend the money as it sees fit. It has granted a similar PILOT program for the Vonage developer. It is time to examine this PILOT program together with the schools’ budget crisis.
I hope to engage with you further in the coming months and hopefully earn your trust.
Thank you,
Ron Emma
